Cookie policy – Nzbettinglaw
A legal reference site needs few technical tools, and Nzbettinglaw sets out here which cookies and similar technologies it uses, for what, and how they can be declined. A cookie is a small text file the browser keeps on a device; local and session storage entries and counting pixels work in a similar way and are covered as well.
The legal footing
Personal information gathered by cookies or like tools is governed by the Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles (section 22). Collection serves a lawful purpose tied to operating the site (IPP 1) and people are told what is collected and why (IPP 3). The information is guarded by reasonable security safeguards (IPP 5), is retained only as long as needed (IPP 9) and goes outside New Zealand only on the terms of IPP 12. A choice given in the banner can be changed whenever wished.
Files that need no choice
Without these the site cannot operate dependably. They hold a session open, balance load between servers, protect forms from abuse and remember the banner answer. They are set with no separate choice. Session files expire on closing the browser, and the remembered answer lasts no more than twelve months.
Files that need a choice
Functional files recall display preferences such as the section last opened. Analytics files count page views and show which pages are read, which lets content be improved. Both kinds are set only once the banner has been answered. IP addresses are shortened for analysis, and no profile following behaviour across sites is built.
Services from other providers
An embedded video or map may set files of its own, and the provider’s privacy terms then apply as well; objections are made to that provider. Nzbettinglaw sets no advertising cookies for personalised ads unless the banner offers a clear choice.
Declining and changing
The "Cookie settings" link in the footer allows a choice to be changed or withdrawn at any time, and withdrawal acts for the future. Browsers also allow blocking and deleting cookies in their own settings. After necessary files are deleted the banner returns, and some features may briefly stop working.
Complaints
A complaint about handling of personal information may be made to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. The privacy policy of this site describes the handling in more detail.
